Russian cars with diesel engines. Dieselgate in Russian: why Russians shun diesel cars

The share of diesel models and modifications in the overall picture of the passenger vehicle fleet is significantly less than cars with gasoline engines. However, the demand for them is stable, and in recent years it is constantly growing, if not in specific markets, then in a global sense for sure. There are many diesel offers in Russian Federation. Today, Auto News of the Day introduces its readers to relatively affordable options.

Diesel cars have always been more expensive than their gasoline counterparts, so there is no need to talk about any “budget” options. We will provide data on a dozen, let’s say, more or less affordable cars with heavy fuel engines, which are offered in Russian car dealerships.

Speaking of prices, it is worth noting that they are in a certain sense approximate and may vary depending on the offer of a particular dealer. We're just talking about the big picture.

Eighth place remained for Peugeot Partner. Minivan with 90 hp diesel engine. will cost from 1,100 thousand rubles.

Front-wheel drive Peugeot 408 sedan with a 112 hp diesel engine. costs from 1,055 thousand rubles - seventh place.

The top five most affordable diesel passenger models in Russia is UAZ Pickup. It costs from 970 thousand rubles and is equipped with a 114 hp engine.

The front-wheel drive Hyundai i30 hatchback takes 4th place. Option with a diesel engine of 128 hp. will cost 930 thousand rubles.

The domestic SUV UAZ Patriot in diesel version costs from 859 thousand rubles. Power – 114 hp.

Popular among the people Renault Duster with a diesel engine of 109 hp and all-wheel drive costs from 829 thousand rubles.

As expected, the most affordable diesel car is the UAZ Hunter. With the same 114-horsepower engine, the SUV costs from 589 thousand rubles. However we're talking about, most likely about the stock of some dealers. At least on the automaker’s official website today only gasoline versions of the Hunter are presented.

Diesel engines for cars are different, and it’s not just the volume and number of cylinders, so let’s try to briefly review modern market and find out which engines are the most reliable.

Who did the ratings give the lead?

Associations with the word “diesel” for a resident of Russia are always clear: the smell of diesel fuel from passenger bus, black fumes from a passing truck, vintage jeans and a watch from the brand of the same name. Nevertheless, for most Europeans, the word, which comes from the name of the German inventor, is synonymous with the reliable, inexpensive and powerful “heart” of a car. In our country, its popularity is not so high, apparently due to weather conditions and the knowledge that diesel fuel thickens in the cold.

Reliability ratings, and especially for cars, are a thankless task. There are as many opinions as there are lists in which the compiler simply expresses his view on a particular subject. That is why we would like to draw your attention to the fact that the rating below does not pretend to become an indisputable truth, but is just an attempt to systematize data, knowledge and (partially) the personal point of view of the compiler.

In search of an answer to the question of which diesel engine occupies a leading position in the configuration of passenger cars, you will notice that some ratings name the best products from the Mercedes and BMW concerns. However, the situation in the world of the automotive industry today is somewhat different, let’s try to figure it out.

As the ratings of the world's major automobile showrooms show, the times when diesel engines of passenger cars were smaller copies of units installed on heavy trucks are a thing of the past. The well-known Volkswagen concern, which developed the 1.9 TDI engine, was especially successful in producing such engines. Today it ranks first and is considered the most balanced in terms of dynamics and power.

Thanks to the latest engineering solutions, in particular, an updated turbine and increased pressure in the combustion chambers, it was possible not only to achieve unique environmental characteristics, but also to reduce. Moreover, the power remained at the same level (90–120 hp). The newest cars of the Passat series are now equipped with an engine with maximum performance (BlueMotion equipment). Fuel consumption is 3.3 liters per 100 km.

Diesel winners of the car market

Second place is occupied by a modification of the engine with three turbines, owned by the German company BMW. This unit was presented for the first time a few years ago. It has 6 cylinders and, having a volume of 3.0 liters, is capable of developing a power of 381 hp. With. The latest 5 and 7 series cars, as well as heavy crossovers with the X5 and X6 indices, are equipped with these engines. Its modification is equipped with convertibles having serial number 6. True, it has two turbines, due to which the power is reduced to 313 hp. With.

Not long ago, potential buyers were presented with cars whose engines have four turbines, and with a torque of 800 Nm, the power will be in the range of 390–406 hp. With.

A car with a four-turbine engine

The third place in our rating was taken by the American industrial diesel engine company Cummins, which produced a super-boosted engine commissioned by the famous Dodge company. To be fair, it should be noted that overseas manufacturers did not pay too much attention to diesel engines, preferring to develop gasoline engines. However, increasing in lately The demand for cars with units that consume diesel fuel forced them to turn their attention to the production of diesel engines.

The model proved to be quite powerful (240–275 hp), but in an attempt to occupy the “diesel” niche in the market, the Americans lied and passed off the Italian concern Fiat as their development. The Maserati Ghibli was equipped with a model of such an engine, but due to the crisis, production was transferred to US industrialists.

This engine was recognized not only as the most environmentally friendly, but also the most innovative: in its production, metals used in the space industry and plasma fuel purification filters were used. The fact that the engine took only third place is due to its narrow focus. It is installed only on sports cars and Dodge Ram pickups. In terms of efficiency, it can give a head start to its competitors: consumption is only 8.5 liters per 100 kilometers.

Who is not far behind the top three?

The Koreans, who burst into the global automobile market 20 years ago, not only managed to take a worthy place in it, but also “move up” in the ranking of Japanese giants. Having come a long way “from electric kettles to mining dump trucks,” they also do not want to miss out on their benefits, which are promised by the increased demand for cars equipped with diesel engines.

As always, Asian manufacturers acted very cunningly: not wanting to overhaul production and compete with Europeans and Americans in the power of units, they managed to create a 1.7 liter engine that can produce 110–136 hp. With. Don’t rush to wrinkle your nose contemptuously! With such rather modest data (compared to products from other manufacturers), the Hyundai diesel engine has such incredible torque that it is not inferior in dynamics to gasoline units with a power of 150–170 hp. With.

It must be said that the Hyundai i40, supplied to the European market, is equipped with such a unit. In Korea, diesel engines were also somehow not found wide application(or the wave of “fashion” has not yet reached there), and therefore they are currently only installed on export cars. Recently, the same unit appeared on a crossover with the ix35 index, and now it is equipped in such popular cars as Grandeur and Sonata. Fuel consumption, however, is higher than that of competitors, but the Koreans are not trying to surprise anyone. Their mission is to deliver reliable workhorses capable of average fuel consumption, in this case 5.5 liters per 100 km.

"Squeezing" sufficient quantity power from cars and having won its own cell in the market, the Japanese concern Toyota now makes no sense to prove anything to anyone. The concept that manufacturers have devoted all their efforts to is ecology and economy while maintaining sufficient power. And they succeeded. When creating an engine for their compact car called Urban Cruiser, they thought about making it not only convenient for residents of megacities to move around the city, but also not having a “calculator” in their heads that calculates fuel costs.

One of the smallest diesel units today is a 1.4 liter engine with a power of only 90 hp. With. This is the fifth place in our ranking. Such parameters, however, do not interfere with the creation of torque, which makes it easy to “pull” an all-wheel drive vehicle. Diesel fuel consumption, depending on the travel mode, ranges from 4 to 6 liters per 100 km.

So which one is the most reliable?

This question is a little naive, since this parameter depends on many factors, including driving style. But if you choose the best from the above list, then the championship in reliability will be given to the American Cummins with a Dodge engine.

And it’s not about power or fuel consumption per 100 km. Most likely, the materials used in production play a role. The cylinder block is made of high-carbon cast iron, capable of withstanding not only high pressure, but also significant temperature conditions. And its pistons are made of a special aluminum alloy, which is used in spacecraft parts. This means that they are able to withstand both long-term operation under extreme conditions and a sharp increase in load when changing speed.

With a diesel power plant, they have increased noticeably. Many interesting models have appeared, efficient internal combustion engines, which are superior to their gasoline counterparts in many respects. Previous diesel engines were no different high power and productivity. Although fuel consumption was slightly lower compared to gasoline cars, this still did not add any special attractiveness to such cars. But then came the era of modern, productive and economical diesel engines. Cars running on diesel fuel are traditionally more expensive than a similar model with a gasoline engine. This doesn't stop buyers. There are a number of objective reasons for this.

Not all diesel cars should be trusted due to dubious reliability, low efficiency, poor engine life and other factors. This forces experts to constantly analyze the automotive market, trying to find best cars in different categories, including cars with .

Key Benefits

First, let's briefly go over the advantages of diesel cars to understand what is causing the high demand and why many car enthusiasts should choose this type of engine rather than a gasoline one.

The main advantages are manifested in:

  • efficiency;
  • high-torque;
  • demand in the secondary market;
  • durability;
  • security.

The main reason is precisely the low fuel consumption. If a car is purchased for regular trips, when you need to travel at least several thousand kilometers a month, buying a diesel engine is fully justified. But for rare trips from work to home, the inflated price will not be worth the savings on fuel.

Rating 2019

The list of favorites was divided into several thematic subcategories. This made it possible to divide the rating among the best diesel cars into the corresponding types:

  • budget models;
  • passenger cars;
  • SUVs;
  • crossovers.

This is a logical classification, since some buyers choose among the most budget-friendly options, while others simply care about availability without reference to price. There are also those who are only interested in crossovers or SUVs.

All diesel cars included in the final rating of 2019 are officially sold in Russia. Some models are supplied for sale, while others are completely assembled at domestic enterprises. Authoritative experts, ordinary car enthusiasts and leading automobile publications in the country took part in compiling the lists.

Leaders in the budget category

To reduce cost, most budget cars use predominantly gasoline internal combustion engines. But with the advent of modern diesel engines, market trends forced automakers to add engines operating on diesel fuel to the list of configurations.

  • Kia Soul. A fairly inexpensive South Korean car that is perfect for the city, as a family car. Soul is economical and is equipped with a reliable 1.6-liter diesel engine with a capacity of 128 horsepower. It consumes about 5-7 liters per 100 kilometers. This is a well-deserved favorite in the rating due to its low diesel consumption, reliability, and good sound insulation.
  • Renault Duster. In second place in the 2019 ranking among budget cars was the Duster crossover from the French company Renault. Here, a 1.5-liter turbodiesel and 109 horsepower is available under the hood. In combination with all-wheel drive, it becomes a real SUV. It is very cheap, consumes little fuel, and has enviable cross-country ability.
  • SsangYong New Actyon. The second generation of the South Korean compact crossover. Produced since 2010 and assembled in Vladivostok. Under the hood is a 2.0-liter turbodiesel engine with an output of 141 horsepower. Third place due to complaints about some shortcomings and a noisy interior.
  • Peugeot 308. Traditionally unusual French appearance, good assembly and enviable efficiency made the 308 extremely popular in Europe and Russia. There are also 2 turbodiesels, 1.6 and 2.0 liters. The body is not the most durable, but the consumption is very modest, rarely exceeding 6-7 liters even in the city.

There are not many diesel cars in the budget segment. Some frankly do not reach the level of leaders, while others cannot provide the required characteristics. But the situation is changing, and therefore in the near future there will be much more budget cars with high-quality diesel engines.

Rating among passenger diesel cars

The budget of many buyers allows them to purchase cars that run on diesel fuel among the mid-range and . They receive the same benefits from running their cars on diesel fuel as state employees. But premium diesel internal combustion engines are even more efficient, productive and economical. They are less likely to cause problems.

  • BMW 5 Series. The Bavarian automaker BMW produces some of the best diesel engines in the world. This is confirmed by the ultra-reliability of the 530d xDrive modification. One of the most advanced cars paired with an excellent power unit. Under the hood is a 6-cylinder turbo engine with a volume of 3.0 liters and a capacity of 249 horsepower. With such power, the Bavarian requires only 5.4 liters per 100 km.
  • Audi A4. Another German car, which, as part of the updates, received a modernized 2.0-liter diesel engine. The turbine provided it with a power of 190 horsepower. Consumption is approximately at the level of the rating winner, but due to the fairly stiff suspension, only the second line.
  • Skoda Superb. When choosing reputable cars that run on diesel fuel, you should pay attention to the Skoda Superb. One of the most affordable in its class, it consumes diesel fuel economically, has high efficiency and German level reliability. It entered the Superb rating thanks to a 2.0-liter diesel engine with an output of 140 horsepower. In the combined cycle, it requires up to 6 liters of diesel fuel per 100 km. ways. Comfort and dynamics are slightly lower than those of the models in the first positions.
  • Volkswagen Passat. It is surprising that the brainchild of Volkswagen was higher in this ranking than the Volkswagen representative himself. The reason is overpriced. But the Passat is versatile, practical, reliable and roomy. Getting into the rating is due to the presence in the line of 2.0-liter diesel engines with a power of 150 horses. It requires about 4.8 liters of diesel fuel per 100 km.

  • Citroen DS5. The flagship of the Citroen DS line. Stylish design, rich equipment, many innovative solutions for fairly reasonable money. But the reputation of the French company does not yet allow them to become leaders in the world rankings. But there are no complaints about their 2.0-liter turbodiesel with 163 horsepower. Fast, economical and reliable. It does not require more than 6 liters in a mixed cycle.

The minimum cost of these machines is about 1.5 million rubles. In certain trim levels, the price tag confidently exceeds the 2-2.5 million mark. But their reliability, reliability and efficiency fully justify the costs.

The best diesel crossovers and SUVs

  • BMW X5. The Bavarian car, which belongs more to the category of SUVs than crossovers, received its high place due to the modification of the 30d. This is a three-liter diesel engine with a capacity of 249 horsepower. This performance is achieved due to the turbine. It also helps to use diesel fuel more efficiently and reduce fuel consumption. Even the use of an automatic transmission does not prevent a large SUV from consuming about 6-7 liters on the highway. But in the city the figure is increasing. But this is one of the few diesel SUVs that can accelerate from zero to hundreds in just 7 seconds.
  • Audi Q5. A premium crossover of solid size and with an impressive list of proposed power plants. For the Q5 produced by Audi, there is a whole line of diesel engines of the TDI series. They received power of 150, 163 and 190 horsepower. But the crossover made it into the rating thanks to its most powerful, extremely economical and reliable engine. This is a 3.0-liter unit with 286 horsepower. Combined with an 8-speed TipTronic automatic transmission. Such a tandem requires about 8 liters of diesel fuel in the city, which is an unattainable figure for many. But since car maintenance is frankly expensive, the crossover failed to reach the top of the rating.
  • Toyota Land Cruiser Prado. A true legend among SUVs. Exemplary Japanese reliability, reliability of key components, and powerful suspension make the Cruiser Prado one of the best off-road vehicles in the world. But its 2.8-liter diesel engine with a power of 177 horsepower cannot boast of exemplary efficiency. Its advantage is its design and huge engine life.
  • Volkswagen Tiguan. An excellent crossover with a huge list of advantages. The design is not the brightest, but the majority of fans are quite satisfied with the company's design approach. But the Tiguan is strong, dynamic, spacious and practical. The diesel internal combustion engine with a capacity of 150 horsepower and a volume of 2.0 liters performs well. The body is reliably protected from corrosion, there are no problems with gearboxes, and service is noticeably cheaper compared to competitors.
  • Hyundai Santa Fe. One of the best crossovers from the South Korean automaker. From generation to generation, Santa Fe has been improved and improved. Even the first generation still feels confident. The place in the ranking is due to the presence of a 2.2-liter diesel engine in the range. It is combined with an automatic transmission and an all-wheel drive system. Together they overcome difficult obstacles and save the owner money on visiting a gas station. The engine does not absorb more than 7 liters in the combined cycle.

  • Kia Sorento Prime. The new generation of Sorento, from which Kia made its flagship crossover. The result was excellent, since the car remained relatively inexpensive for its status, but at the same time allowed the consumer to get a whole scattering of components, modern systems and high-quality finishing materials. Their diesel engine is the most fuel efficient in the Sorento Prime range. This is a 2.2-liter turbodiesel with 200 horsepower. Claimed average consumption is 6.2 liters per 100 km.
  • Skoda Kodiaq. A new product from Skoda, which has been sold in Russia since the summer of 2017, and since 2018 it has been assembled in Nizhny Novgorod. Practical, reliable and roomy crossover, offered with diesel engine automobile. Under the hood is a 2.0-liter TDI diesel engine with a turbine. Moreover, it can produce 150 and 190 horsepower, depending on the modification. The average consumption is exemplary and is at the level of 5-5.7 liters of diesel fuel per 100 kilometers.
  • Toyota RAV4. One of the world's bestsellers among crossovers. Toyota offers only one diesel engine for the current version of the RAV4. But it exhibits impressive performance. The volume is 2.2 liters, and the turbocharger allows you to squeeze 150 horsepower out of it. Pleasantly pleasing is the consumption of 6.7 liters of diesel fuel in the combined cycle per 100 kilometers traveled. High-quality assembly, reliability and durability make it a desirable purchase.
  • Nissan Qashqai. A fairly inexpensive Japanese crossover that can turn into a compact SUV due to all-wheel drive and a diesel power plant. The range of engines is limited to only one diesel engine. This is a small 1.6-liter turbocharged unit with 130 horsepower. The dynamics are not the best, but in the combined cycle you need only 4.9 liters of fuel.
  • Kia Sportage. For the 4th generation of the popular South Korean crossover, only one diesel power unit is available. But he looks very decent. This is a 2.0-liter turbo engine with 185 horsepower. Combined with a 6-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive system. You won’t have to spend more than 6.3 liters of diesel fuel per 100 kilometers. And this is in a mixed cycle.

  • Hyundai Tucson. Another South Korean crossover. This time from Hyundai. It uses the same engine as the Kia Sportage. Therefore, we are talking about a 2.0-liter internal combustion engine with direct injection and a turbocharger. It produces 185 horsepower. In the efficiency component, Hyundai is ahead of Kia. Here the declared average consumption is 6 liters per 100 km.
  • Renault Koleos. A very interesting car, which was introduced in Russia in its 2nd generation just 2 years ago. Koleos has significantly surpassed its predecessor in all respects. A high-quality, interesting and practical car. The top-end configuration is offered with the flagship internal combustion engine. And this is a turbodiesel. From a volume of 2.0 liters, French engineers managed to squeeze out 177 horsepower and raise the torque to 380 Nm. This allows you not only to accelerate to 200 kilometers per hour, but also to consume an average of 5.8 liters of diesel fuel per 100 kilometers.

The advantages of diesel engines significantly outweigh their disadvantages. There are not many disadvantages to engines operating on diesel fuel. The bulk of the claims that were actively made against diesel engines about 10 years ago have now completely lost their relevance.

But many domestic car enthusiasts still believe that diesel power units are very noisy, they produce thick black exhaust, and their interiors are very cold in winter due to slow heating.

In fact, we managed to get rid of the classic rattling noise that old diesel engines were famous for a long time ago. Exhaust gases are now sometimes cleaner than those of gasoline internal combustion engines. This is due to the exhaust gas afterburning system. Well, the problem of cold was solved with more efficient heaters, preheaters and special reheaters.

Only the buyer himself must decide which car to give preference to and whether it is worth spending money on a diesel car. If the car is not intended for active use, and there are problems with high-quality diesel fuel in the region, this idea should be abandoned. The reliability, reliability and durability of the motor directly depends on the attitude towards it, care, maintenance and timely maintenance. Modern diesel engines are characterized by increased requirements for fuel quality, which is still one of the main reasons for the rather low popularity of these internal combustion engines in Russia.

Today, for the opportunity to save significantly, we have to overpay at a time - judge for yourself, if we want to spend less gas when heating our own house, we first need to spend money and insulate it, if we want to start saving time in the kitchen, we buy a multicooker, dishwasher and another kitchen appliances... if we want to save on fuel for a car, then we will similarly have to spend money on buying a diesel car. Indeed, today cars running on diesel fuel are quite expensive - much more expensive than their gasoline counterparts within the same model. The reason for this lies in the slightly more complex design and costly production of the diesel engine itself. But what is the cost of saving?!

In the article, we will find out which new diesel cars can be bought for 800 thousand rubles (plus/minus 100 thousand - more precisely, like this: plus 30-40 thousand / minus only a number of thousands limited by zero), we will divide them into passenger cars, crossovers and SUVs, Consider, the Chinese automobile industry is no more expensive than 800 thousand, because, to be honest, for 800,000 it is quite difficult to find a really worthwhile car.

So, what can you buy for no more than 800 thousand rubles on the Russian car market?

Passenger diesel cars up to 800 thousand

Peugeot 208 - from 736 to 796,000 rubles

First on the list is the French B-class hatchback, which has two modifications available that meet our criteria, differing, in general, only in configurations - both have a 1.6-liter turbocharged engine producing 92 horsepower, and consuming just under 4 liters in the combined cycle, as stated by the manufacturer. Unfortunately, both diesel engines are equipped exclusively with a manual transmission.

Diesel crossovers, minivans and SUVs up to 800 thousand

UAZ Hunter - 550,000 rubles

Of course, the first thing that comes to mind when choosing a budget car option is the domestic auto industry, and the first thing that comes to mind when thinking about a budget diesel car is the UAZ. And the Ulyanovsk plant has something to offer here (though only in one configuration) - the UAZ Hunter is a real spring SUV in its size with a turbocharged diesel engine and, unlike most crossovers and SUVs listed below, the UAZ is an all-wheel drive.

All characteristics of the UAZ Hunter for 550,000 rubles:

  • Acceleration time from 0 to 100 km/h, in seconds: 30

Great Wall Hover H5 - 835,000 rubles

And here is the first non-French and SUV on our list of diesel cars at a price no more than 800 thousand rubles... True, from China. Hover's two-liter turbocharged engine produces 150 horsepower and more than 300 Nm of torque, and its size and spaciousness will give odds to many other SUVs that cost more than a million.

All characteristics of the Great Wall Hover H5 for 835,000 rubles:

  • Maximum speed in km/h: 170
  • Acceleration time from 0 to 100 km/h, in seconds: 11

Renault Duster - from 680 to 735,000 rubles

And this Frenchman is much more popular in our country than all the previous ones (perhaps even combined). Renault Duster has established itself as one of the most budget crossovers, although there are reviews online about its poor reliability.

For a price of up to 800 thousand rubles (even significantly lower), the Renault automaker offers us a fairly economical (combined consumption of no more than 6 liters) version with a 1.5 liter engine producing 90 horsepower. Quite an attractive option for an inexpensive crossover for many car enthusiasts! However, this is another mono-drive crossover (with front-wheel drive) in our catalog.

In our country, this is largely due to the stereotypes of Russian motorists, who, out of old memory, consider diesel engines to be noisy and difficult to maintain. In addition, there is an opinion that diesel fuel cars are not adapted to the cold climate of Mother Russia and may not start in cold weather, because diesel fuel is susceptible to freezing. Automakers, in turn, say that even a short test drive in a modern diesel car can easily destroy these outdated myths. “With the current level of engine technology, diesel engines have virtually no shortcomings. Even in the cold season, there are no difficulties in operating a diesel engine,” says Maxim Vinogradov, commercial director of Volvo Car Russia.

However, the problem for owners of diesel cars remains the poor quality of diesel fuel at Russian gas stations. Indeed, impurities in diesel fuel can damage expensive fuel equipment. In addition, there is a risk of refueling with summer diesel fuel during the demi-season or during a sharp cold snap. However, these concerns largely concern the regions, while in major cities Finding gas stations with high-quality diesel fuel today is not difficult.

According to Ilya Nikonorov, head of the marketing and public relations department at MMS Rus, the situation with the quality of diesel fuel is changing for the better every year, as evidenced by a decrease in the number of warranty claims related to low-quality fuel.

The undeniable advantages of diesel engines over gasoline engines traditionally include greater torque at low speeds, lower fuel consumption, and the ability to travel a greater distance on one tank. However, even despite the fact that the cost of diesel fuel today is on average 7% lower than gasoline, the benefits of purchasing a car running on heavy fuel are not obvious to most Russian motorists. After all, diesel cars themselves are usually more expensive than gasoline modifications, and savings from more modest fuel consumption can compensate for the difference in purchase prices, at best, by the end of the warranty period.

Overpaying or saving?

According to Vladimir Miroshnikov, development director of the Rolf company, modern diesel engines are quite high-tech, and their production, as a rule, turns out to be more expensive than atmospheric gasoline engines of a similar displacement. “From a technical point of view, when designing diesel cars, additional parts and materials are used, which in turn affects the price difference compared to gasoline versions. For example, equipping a car with a special fuel pump and additional components that allow it to distribute diesel fuel in more precise proportions, providing significant fuel savings,” explains Ilya Nikonorov.

By the way, in Europe, where diesel cars are especially popular, automakers initially include part of the benefit from tax breaks in the price. The fact is that in European countries the amount of car tax is tied to the level of harmful emissions, which is traditionally lower for diesel versions. In Russia, the maintenance of such cars is often more expensive, including due to a shorter service interval, as well as more expensive repairs of diesel engines.

As Dmitry Baranov, leading expert of Finam Management, says, in our country there is no developed system of incentives that would encourage consumers to purchase and operate diesel cars, because the issue of the price of the car is decisive for the buyer.

Additionally, in Europe the cost of owning a diesel car is lower than a petrol car due to the more expensive fuel. But in Russia, buying a diesel engine is not economically justified on all models. “In Europe, average mileage is significantly higher than here, automobile tourism is very developed, and for Europeans the benefits of using diesel engines are more obvious. In Russia, with its relatively small average annual mileage economic effect from the use of diesel engines is lost,” says Vladimir Miroshnikov.

For heavy off-road vehicles - heavy fuel

Nevertheless, the share of diesel cars on the Russian market has gradually grown in recent years - from 2% in 2006 to 7.6% in 2014. And last year, according to the Autostat agency, it began to decline, amounting to 7.2%. The fact is that the vast majority of models running on heavy fuel are imported into our country, and in the context of a weak ruble, their cost has become even less attractive compared to gasoline versions. At the same time, low demand for such cars in Russia forces automakers to refuse to sell them.

However, this does not apply to premium brands and the SUV segment, where diesel modifications are traditionally most in demand. The leader in the share of diesel versions in sales volume is Volvo - 82.1% at the end of 2015. Such a high figure is provided, first of all, by the brand’s crossovers - XC60 and. As Maxim Vinogradov says, buyers of such cars want to get from the car not only increased cross-country ability and high level comfort, but also greater traction (for example, during acceleration or in off-road conditions).

In second place in terms of the share of diesel modifications in sales volume is Land Rover with an indicator of 74.5%. The Range Rover Evoque, Discovery and Discovery Sport offer more diesel engines than petrol engines and are also more affordable. As the Jaguar Land Rover press service notes, in addition to the greater torque and efficiency of diesel engines, savings on transport taxes are no less important for buyers. For example, for the Range Rover Sport, the available starting diesel engine is a 3.0-liter 249-horsepower engine, while the most affordable gasoline modification is a version with a 3.0-liter 340-horsepower engine.
