Normal temperature of nvidia gtx 1080 card. Operating temperatures and overheating of video cards

The graphics card is the busiest component inside your computer when it comes to gaming. It processes millions of instructions that perform various operations while gaming, and this causes it to get hot. Just like a CPU, the GPU on a graphics card can overheat, which can lead to a variety of problems, including graphics card failure. In a graphics card, the GPU is the main component where overheating can occur. The graphics card memory may also become warm, but it does not go beyond the danger level. Overheating can reduce the lifespan of the GPU and can also cause immediate damage to the graphics card.

What video card temperature is considered normal?

The answer to this question depends on both the manufacturer and the specific model of video card, but in general, anything above 80 degrees Celsius is a sign of concern. If the GPU graphics card temperature exceeds 80°C, you should take appropriate measures to lower it, preferably in the range of 70°C - 75°C or lower.

If you are having problems with the performance of your computer, especially when editing video, processing video, or when playing video it starts to stutter, slow down, or freeze, then the first thing you will need to do is check your video card and compare it with the readings in the table below.

Measures to reduce GPU temperature

Here are all the possible measures you can take to lower your GPU graphics card temperature.

Disable GPU overclocking

If you have overclocked your graphics card, then you should return the GPU to the original settings to prevent it from increasing the GPU temperature. If you plan to overclock again, then you must ensure that the card remains within a safe temperature range in the future. Below you can read how to prevent your card from overheating.

Clean fan and radiator

Dust can become lodged on the heatsink and fan, thereby reducing their performance and efficiency. Open the PC case and then remove the graphics card. After that, use a small brush and a vacuum cleaner to carefully remove any dust from the video card. Install the graphics card again, and then monitor the temperature using GPU monitoring tools.

Changing Thermal Paste

It's possible that the thermal paste between the GPU and the heatsink has dried out and cracked, causing it to lose its effectiveness. You will have to remove the fan and heatsink, and remove any remaining old thermal paste, and carefully apply new thermal paste. Read in more detail on how to properly replace thermal paste.

Faulty fan

If the video card fan is not working properly or perhaps it is spinning very slowly, then this may be due to an increase in GPU temperature. Here the only thing you can do is replace the faulty video card fan with a new one or try one.

Install a more efficient cooling system

You can also install a good, higher-performance third-party Aftermarket GPU cooler on your video card. And if you think that the stock cooler/heatsink fan (HSF) is not doing a good enough job, then you can install a water cooling system for the card to bring down the GPU temperature.

Note: Aftermarket coolers only work with reference video cards or video cards with a standard PCB size.

Increase air flow inside the PC case

Incorrect or poor airflow inside the computer case can also cause the graphics card's temperature to rise. To improve airflow inside your PC case, you can install additional exhaust fans.

Nvidia is improving its video cards and introducing new technologies. An innovation in the Nvidia Geforce GTX 1080 model was the manufacturing process - 16 nm, which allowed 7.2 billion transistors to be placed in a small processor. As part of the new technical process, the processor frequency has increased, which made it possible to achieve high performance. In overclocking mode (Boost), a frequency of 1.8 GHz is reached, and this is not the limit. On serial video cards, overclocking to 2 GHz is possible without the need for a high thermal package.

Main parameters of the model:

  1. Process technology: 16 nm.
  2. 7200 million transistors.
  3. Frequency: 1607 MHz.
  4. Number of shaders: 2560 pcs.
  5. 160 texture blocks.
  6. Memory: GDDR5X with a frequency of 2.5 GHz and a capacity of 8 GB.
  7. Bus: 256 bits.
  8. Bandwidth: 320 GB/s.
  9. Power consumption: 180 W.

Depending on the manufacturer, GTX 1080 specifications may vary slightly.

Review of the Geforce GTX 1080 video card

Obviously, this video card is a gaming one - it is used on powerful platforms, since even at 4K resolution it will provide consistently high FPS in games. Given its power consumption, it is important to know what kind of power supply is needed for the GTX 1080. The manufacturer indicates that the card consumes 180 W, but when overclocked, the power consumption will increase and reach 250 W. Taking into account the energy consumption of other components, it is appropriate to select a power supply that provides a power of at least 700 W, and better - 1000 W.

Depending on the manufacturer, the power consumption of the GTX 1080 will vary. Users also have access to the EVGA PrecisionX utility, which allows overclocking and thereby increasing energy consumption, so this parameter cannot be precisely named.

As for the operating temperature of the GTX 1080, in idle mode the card heats up to 33 degrees. When launching the game Crysis 3, this parameter was 82 degrees, and at maximum load in the FurMark program the temperature rose to 104 degrees.

Comparison of prices from different manufacturers

This product is popular, it is produced different companies. To understand how much a GTX 1080 video card costs, we suggest considering the following table indicating prices and features of the chips.

Excessive load or improper operation may cause damage to various computer components. The temperature of the video card is one of the important parameters that need to be closely monitored.

IN modern computers There are two components whose operation is affected by temperature - the CPU and the video card. These same devices are also the most expensive. Ensuring their smooth operation is considered a priority. The temperature inside the system unit is controlled by programs using sensors. The status of all devices is checked when the system starts. But for the user this information is not provided in convenient form. It can be shown either in BIOS settings, or receive a warning about overheating when it has already occurred. To simplify monitoring, it is recommended to install one of the service programs on your computer.

Temperature monitoring programs

To diagnose and promptly respond to emerging failures, the user needs a program for measuring the temperature of the processor and video card. The following options can be distinguished:

  1. AIDA is a powerful diagnostic complex. Provides the ability to fully monitor all processes occurring on the computer. Well suited as a video card temperature gadget for Windows 7 and later. To use it, after launch you need to find the “Sensors” tab. After that, in the “Temperatures” section, monitor the CPU and GPU indicators. The GPU value will allow you to both check the temperature of the video card and compare it with the benchmark.
  2. HWMonitor is a browser version of the monitoring program. It allows you to simply check the temperature of the processor and video card without spending extra effort. It does not require installation and allows you to view the temperature once if you have doubts about the operation of the devices.
  3. GPU Temp - effective program to check the temperature of the video card. The application does not require payment. After installation, it starts measuring heating in the current mode. It also keeps records in the form of a graph, which allows you to evaluate which applications heat up the device. It operates in the operating environment in the “Notifications” tab, so the program constantly detects the temperature of the video card and records it using logs.
  4. Speedfan is extremely easy to use. Allows you to both find out the temperature of the video card and control the rotation speed of the built-in fans, ensuring an optimal climate inside the computer.

Permissible heating values

To effectively manage the operation of the device, it is important to know what the temperature of the video card and processor should be for comfortable operation. Due to the architecture features of these devices, the meanings are slightly different, for example:

  1. The optimal processor temperature is +35…+50°C. Under conditions of increased load it can rise to +60…+65°C. If the measurement shows higher values, you need to urgently turn off the computer and look for the cause in the cooling system.
  2. The maximum temperature of the video card is higher, it can be up to 85°C at maximum load. In quiet mode, the operating temperature of the video card is +40…+60°C. The main problems with operation begin when using the device in games with high detail or complex 3D graphics. As a result of testing, it is possible to determine threshold temperature values. If they are too high, it may be worth replacing the device with a more advanced one.
  3. Laptops are characterized by higher temperatures due to the design of the device. At +60…+80°C the processor can show stable work, but at values above 90°C failures are inevitable. In addition, a Radeon video card in an inconvenient temperature mode significantly reduces its service life.

What can cause overheating

The main reason for the occurrence of the processor is a breakdown of the cooling system. The system components are as follows:

  1. Fans remove the generated heat outside. A special built-in widget allows you to control the rotation speed of the blades. Due to the ingress of dust, it slows down over time, which leads to failure of the cooling system. There are several common fans in a computer case that are fairly easy to replace. Radeon and Nvidia video cards also have one or more fans built in, and if they fail, you must contact service. Before replacement, you need to clean it by disassembling the components.
  2. The heatsink is made of a heat-conducting alloy and absorbs heat from the chip. It consists of thin aluminum plates, between which there is a cooling air cushion. When a lot of dust gets clogged between the first ones, the cooling efficiency is noticeably reduced. This increases the overall temperature of both the computer and laptop.
  3. Thermal paste ensures gluing of the heatsink and chip for maximum thermal conductivity. Over time, it dries out, which dramatically reduces cooling efficiency. In addition, if applied carelessly in too thick or uneven a layer, it will not cool effectively, leading to device failures.

There is no need to be afraid to do regular cleaning of the cooling system. Desktop computers have a modular design that makes it easy to remove the devices you need and then plug them back in. Cleaning a laptop is somewhat more difficult. In addition, there is very little space inside a mobile computer, so all the components are in close proximity to each other.

All laptop exhaust nozzles should be free of dust and open to allow hot air to escape. Good decision You will want to purchase a ventilated laptop stand, which will significantly improve heat dissipation from the case. For prevention and control, you need to install a processor and video card temperature gadget and regularly look at its values.

In case of abnormal deviations, it is necessary to look for the cause, and not wait until the devices melt and stop working. It is also important to know what normal temperature video card allows it to work most stably, to obtain better experience during the game.

Nvidia GeForce GTX 1080 Pascal review | Temperature and noise level

Temperature and clock speed

During Nvidia's press conference in Austin, Texas, where it was unveiled, we were perplexed by how the card remained at 65°C over and over again in the demo videos. To get a similar result, we tried setting the fan duty cycle to 100%, and this turned out to be the easiest solution.

In our standard test system with an ambient temperature of 22 °C, our measurements showed 68 - 69 °C. In another 20°C room with a lower Full HD resolution, we finally got the 65°C shown at Nvidia's presentation. The noise level from the card was not very high for a large room filled with journalists as staff comments were heard over the speakers. However, in the office the noise became much more noticeable.

Unfortunately, actual temperatures after three minutes of warm-up are significantly different from what we saw at Nvidia's press conference. It doesn't take long to reach the maximum target temperature of 83 - 84 degrees Celsius. And during the stress test it reached 85 degrees.

Temperature, heating, ambient temperature 22 degrees Celsius (lower is better)

Look at the orange line. At the beginning of our test, we set the frequency to 2126 MHz, which subsequently settled at around 2088 MHz. Running at 1920x1080 not only saves 34 watts of heat, but also helps achieve a 2.1 GHz GPU Boost clock.

Reaching the maximum target temperature, Nvidia GeForce GTX 1080 Pascal Reduces GPU clock speed. During the gaming test it drops to basic level, and there is no trace left of GPU Boost. The situation gets even worse during the stress test, in which the core frequency drops below 1607 MHz, although this is the lower threshold for Nvidia GeForce GTX 1080 Pascal .

Clock speed, heating, ambient temperature 22 degrees Celsius, MHz (lower is better)

Nvidia's direct heat dissipation cooler gets the job done just fine, but the GeForce GTX 1080 Founders Edition has well-defined limits that make it pointless to overclock the card for long or very high workloads. At a resolution of 1920x1080 pixels the load is noticeably lower, but who buys a $700 video card for Full HD?

Idle temperature in the infrared spectrum

More information can be found in the article "Measurement Science: Taking Accurate IR Thermal Readings"(English).

Hottest spot on the map Nvidia GeForce GTX 1080 Pascal idle is one of the two-channel MOSFETs in the voltage regulator. 38 degrees Celsius is not much, especially since the card consumes less than 7 W.

Idle temperature, degrees Celsius (lower is better)

Temperature in games in the infrared spectrum

Our measurements and photos show that the vapor chamber does a good job of keeping the card cool during gaming tests. The temperature of the board under the GPU is two to three degrees Celsius lower than that reported by the GPU's internal temperature sensor. If the cooling system was just a little better, Nvidia's thermal limit wouldn't be such a big deal.

Temperature in games, degrees Celsius (lower is better)

Infrared stress test temperature

It is noteworthy that voltage converters have almost no effect on the thermal efficiency of the card during the stress test. The GPU generates the bulk of the heat, and there was quite a lot of it during our stress test. The GPU board reaches the temperature of the processor itself, and this heat spreads throughout the board. After some time, the heat reaches the memory modules and heats them up, but not above their thermal limit.

Stress test temperature, degrees Celsius (lower is better)

Of course, few people constantly run stress tests for several hours at a time. In other words, we don't see any problems with heating.

Fan speed and noise level

As usual, we carry out measurements in a soundproof chamber using a quiet test system of our own design. Under these conditions we can measure noise levels starting at approximately 22 dB(A). Hardware limitations do not allow us to obtain values below this level, although this video card does not even come close to it.

Let's look at the noise figures Nvidia GeForce GTX 1080 Pascal during a gaming test, after the card has reached its maximum temperature (see temperature graphs above).

41.6 dB(A) is a fairly good figure, especially when compared with cheaper GeForce GTX 980 cooler designs from partners. In addition, it is 2 dB (A) lower than the reference GeForce GTX 980.

During the stress test, the noise level rises to 46.8 dB(A). This is 3.2 dB (A) lower than the GeForce GTX 980. Also a good result.

Hello friends! As you probably know, all electronics get hot during operation, so some devices require a powerful cooling system. Today I will tell you what the normal temperature of a video card is and how to find out this parameter.

What does temperature depend on and what does it affect?

The operating temperature of this device primarily depends on the graphics processor used - the more powerful it is, the hotter it gets. So, 1070 generates more heat during operation than, for example, 1050 or 1050 Ti.

Accordingly, such a device requires a more advanced cooling system. Therefore, video cards from different brands that have design differences may have different temperatures due to different cooling.

The amount of video memory and its clock frequency actually do not affect the heating of the device: for example, the GTX 1060 Ti 6g will heat up no more than the GTX 1060 3gb - provided that the cooling system is the same and therefore the heat sink is the same.

In relation to devices manufactured by AMD, the above factors apply in the same way. It was not noticed that despite the different architecture of ATI Radeon or Nvidia GeForce, they heat up more: structurally, these two brands are still similar.

It should be borne in mind that devices with a passive cooling system, that is, without fans, heat up more, although not as powerful. And a liquid cooling system has better heat dissipation, so a video card equipped with it will heat up less than a device with one or more coolers, even the most powerful ones.
When the operating temperature rises above normal, a decrease in performance is observed while the device is operating. In games, FPS drops and freezes are possible, as well as third-party artifacts - flickering dots or stripes - in any mode.

In case of critical overheating, it is possible to crash into a “blue screen” or reboot the computer. If such phenomena are regularly observed, it is necessary to check the temperature and take measures to reduce it. Chronic overheating can lead to complete loss of functionality of the device.

Normal temperature in different modes

During idle time, a temperature of no more than 50 °C is considered normal. If the test results are higher, then either the device is not working correctly, or even in this mode it is performing some operations.

In these cases, a common occurrence is a miner introduced into the OS in the form of a virus or the same “malware” on some site that farms cryptocurrency for its owner, without the permission of the visitor.

As the load increases, the operating temperature can increase to 80 °C. The maximum should not exceed 90 °C. So if your video card heats up to 70 degrees when running games or specific software, then this is normal: this temperature is considered normal when playing.

The same is true for mining, since remote computing is essentially no different from graphics rendering: the same load is applied to the GPU.

The optimal temperature should be 60 °C, but only devices with effective system cooling.

How to find out GPU temperature

The easiest way is to install the free HWmonitor utility. It will be useful in that it also allows you to determine operating temperature chipset, processor and hard drives. The program displays it in degrees Celsius and Fahrenheit.
Three parameters are displayed: current, as well as minimum and maximum, which is convenient for testing. Despite the English-language interface, using the utility is not difficult - there are no options or settings here, except for monitoring the parameters of interest.

How to reduce it

Due to circumstances, it may be necessary to reduce the operating temperature under load. You can use one of the following methods, or all of them at once:

  • Completely clean the insides of the system unit, including the video card, from dust. Better air circulation means more efficient cooling. It is not recommended to use a vacuum cleaner or hair dryer with a metal attachment for this purpose - only plastic. Discharge static electricity can penetrate the board and cause failure of one or more parts.
  • Install additional fans inside the case to improve air circulation. Please note that the noise generated by the computer will also increase. Propellers should be set to blowing, not blowing, so that the computer does not absorb all the dust that flies around the room.
  • Disable auto overclocking in the video card settings. Less power means less heating.
  • Install a more powerful cooling system - remove the old stock fan and install a better one or, alternatively, a liquid cooling system. It should be remembered that cheap propellers are less efficient than “original” ones and are intended primarily for devices with a passive cooling system.
  • Change the thermal paste between the GPU and the heatsink. If the video card has been in use for some time, it is possible that the old thermal paste has simply dried out.

That's all, actually. effective methods that I know. If you have anything to add, don’t hesitate to discuss it in the comments. I also recommend reading publications about
