Mobile phone galaxy j5 prime. Review of the smartphone Samsung Galaxy J5 Prime with an excellent body

Everyone knows that Samsung is gaining popularity and interest in its products year by year with various technical innovations. The most advanced and amazing “fresh” ones, of course, first of all appear in the leading flagships of the luxury series. However, we must pay tribute to the South Korean developer: in a furious race for the technological development of premium models, Samsung does not forget about ordinary people, for whom the reliability of a phone often plays a much greater role than its unusual design. About a representative of such proven middle peasants - samsung galaxy J5 Prime - and will be discussed in our review.

Specifications

The Samsung Galaxy J5 Prime is an improved version of the 2016 Samsung Galaxy J5. Although it can be called simply an improved version of a phone that is an order of magnitude superior to its predecessor and resembles it only in name. The updated J5 Prime boldly stands out from the series of South Korean state employees and rather boldly claims a place in the middle class. Let's see if he's eligible.

Frame

J5 Prime, starting from the design, is an order of magnitude different from other representatives of its niche. The body of the phone has a mostly metal frame. Plastic elements are only on the rear panel at the top and bottom - they hide the antennas. The display is hidden under glass, the edges of which are rounded. You will not find anything like this in any other model of the J-series, because the rest are completely made of plastic. In general, the device looks quite stylish and not cheap.

The design, apart from the body materials, is quite familiar to all Samsung people. On the front panel, under the screen, there is a mechanical Home button with a built-in fingerprint scanner, on the sides of it are the touch controls “Running applications” and “Return”. These buttons, by the way, work without backlighting, i. they are visible even when the phone is in sleep mode. Above the screen, a speaker, the company's corporate logo, a front camera with a flash indicator, and a proximity sensor took their usual place.

The updated version of J5 Prime is presented in only two colors, but the most popular

The phone did not differ in particular size. Its length and width are 142.8 x 69.5 mm. The thickness of the smartphone is only 8.1 mm, and the weight is 143 g. Despite its compactness, the device fits perfectly in the hand. Ease of use is equally noted by both men and women.

Color variations do not indulge. The gadget is presented only in two of the most popular and sought-after scales - black (which actually turns out to be rather dark blue or even dark gray) and gold.

technical stuff

In technical terms, the J5 Prime is not surprising and lacks stars from the sky. But at the same time, the phone does not fail. Installed here quad-core processor Exynos 7570 clocked at 1.4 GHz. The chipset was created taking into account the 14 nm process technology standards, and it runs on Cortex-A53 cores. As for the graphics power of the Samsung Galaxy J5 Prime, the Mali T720 chip is responsible for it.

With such a technical equipment, the phone can easily cope with everyday tasks of medium complexity. Launching applications, working in them, switching between programs - the J5 Prime copes with all this without problems. However, one should not expect impeccable behavior from the gadget in the case, for example, with heavy 3D games. They will start up, but how the further game will go is an interesting question.

The operating system on the Galaxy J5 Prime is fresh - it's Android 6.0.1 with the TouchWiz shell. The interface seems lightweight and easy to use.

In testing, the Galaxy J5 Prime processor produces quite a good result for its niche. Of course, it makes no sense to compare with models of a higher class, because. the smartphone will obviously lag behind
However, for basic work with the phone, the resources provided here are more than enough The phone can easily be loaded with multiple tasks, as well as run several applications at the same time
Difficulties will only cause very difficult tasks, originally intended for more powerful devices.
Once again, for the economy class niche, the Galaxy J5 Prime demonstrates reliable and efficient operation without bugs and freezes.

Screen

The screen diagonal is 5 inches, which is enough for the given dimensions of the phone. The resolution is standard - 1280 x 720 pixels, i.e. HD only. The color depth is 16 million bits. The screen itself is covered with a protective 2.5D Corning Gorilla Glass 4.

The device does not have automatic brightness control and you will have to adjust this item manually. However, you will agree that adjusting the brightness of the screen with two finger taps is not so difficult. Especially when you consider that the display produces a perfectly distinguishable picture even on the street under the bright rays of the sun.

The color rendition of the phone is also at a decent level - the colors look natural and do not hurt the eyes. Unfortunately, there are no special settings for screen modes. But the picture will be pleasing to the eye anyway.

I was very surprised by the fact that the J5 Prime does not have a SuperAMOLED screen, which even the less powerful J3 has. The developers, apparently, decided to conduct a small experiment and equipped this gadget with a PLS TFT LCD type display. A screen of this type is not bad in itself, but it loses significantly to any SuperAMOLED. The purpose of such an experiment, to be honest, remained beyond our understanding, because Samsung installed the famous screens in much cheaper and simpler models.

PLS-matrix is somewhat inferior in readings to the famous SuperAMOLED from Samsung
Colorful temperature habitually overpriced like all models of the South Korean developer

Ditching the familiar Amoled screen means a slightly worse picture
However, the test results show a decent level

Unfortunately, the developer did not consider it necessary to justify such a rollback as a picture.
The phone does not have automatic brightness control, but with a few taps you can adjust everything yourself. By the way, the brightness of the phone allows you to freely and without any discomfort to use it on the street in the bright sun.

Still, the replacement for a different type of display does not affect the quality of the picture so much. The PLS-matrix gives a high-quality bright image with good color reproduction, excellent clarity and decent saturation. You can be sure that when watching movies, surfing the Internet, looking at photos or doing any other work with PLS TFT LCD, you will be satisfied.

Connection

In the Galaxy J5 Prime, you can fit as many as 2 nano-SIMs working at the same time. At the same time, the developers made sure that in addition to them it was possible to install a flash-card, which is vital in budget models of the J-series. There is one slot for a SIM card and a flash drive, and another for the second SIM card. Agree, very convenient. Indeed, in this case, there is no need to show all your creative skills and place tiny elements in one compartment with acrobatic dexterity.

Memory

Memory in budget phones from Samsung is sorely lacking. On the Galaxy J5 Prime, you will have 2 GB available random access memory and only 16 GB built-in. At the same time, remember that in order to understand how much space you will actually have available, you need to boldly take away half of the free gigabytes of internal memory. Here you can safely dispose of the whole 10.1 GB of RAM, but the rest will be reserved for system files.

The only thing that saves is that the developers of the phone have provided a way out of the situation when the user with his data simply “does not fit” into the dimensions of free bytes allotted to him. You can install a flash card up to 256 GB in your phone.

Battery

The phone, unfortunately, cannot boast of a battery. The capacity of the Li-Pol battery installed here is only 2400 mAh. The most interesting thing is that for the updated Galaxy J5 Prime, this is some kind of rollback to less productive indicators, because its predecessor, the Galaxy J5 2016, had a battery that surpassed the Prime by 700 mAh. And what can I say, the weaker Galaxy J3 has a 2600 mAh battery. However, the problem of low power consumption of the smartphone is solved due to the extremely efficient allocation of resources by the processor. As a result, you get up to 10-13 hours of active work on the Internet, up to 12 hours of video playback, 54 hours of listening to audio with an inactive display and 16 hours of continuous conversation.

The battery in the Galaxy J5 Prime is inferior even to its much weaker counterpart Galaxy J3 With moderate use, the phone will last you about two days And in which case it will offer you to use the extreme power saving function

With minimal use of the phone, its continuous operation without recharging can reach 2-3 days, which is very good and comparable to models of more prestigious classes.

There is no fast charging function in J5 Prime. As well as wireless charging. However, the phone quickly replenishes its energy reserves even without them - 2 hours is enough to raise the charge level to a maximum of 100%. In addition, you can always use the extreme power saving mode, in which the color scheme goes into gray tones, and only the most necessary functions remain active in the phone (calls, messages, etc.). This mode can “give” your device a few more cherished hours of work.

Useful gadgets

In general, the Samsung Galaxy J5 Prime does not indulge its owners with various tasty “buns” from features and applications. However, he can still boast of something.

smart manager

Do not forget here about the multifunctional assistant Smart Manager. This application helps the owner of the phone to effectively monitor the processes that occur in the smartphone. Smart Manager will give you access to options such as built-in storage, power management of the gadget, its RAM and security.

Function button "Home"

The mechanical home button is hard to miss, as it sits right below the phone's screen. This time, the developers have given it a larger assortment of features than in J5, the predecessor of Prime. Now with this button you can wake up the screen, answer an incoming call or turn on the camera with a double tap. It is also important to note that the fingerprint scanner is built into the Home button. Among the budget phones of the J-series, Prime became the first owner of such a technical novelty. The scanner, however, does not work as cleanly as in more expensive mobile devices from Samsung. However, this does not negate the convenience and usefulness of this feature.

This model already has a fingerprint scanner, so loved by many users This very useful utility provides you with additional protection for your phone

Camera Features

The Galaxy J5 Prime has the same camera as the 2016 J5 and J7 models, as well as the more expensive Samsung Galaxy A5, which gives hope for good quality. The resolution of this camera is 13 megapixels, aperture - f / 1.9.

The camera interface is standard for many of the latest models from the South Korean manufacturer. All the icons with the settings of the characteristics are grouped on one side of the screen, and the photo and video camera icons, along with the gallery and the “Shutter” button, are grouped on the other. There are several modes for the user to choose from. These are, for example, panorama, series, sports, night mode and HDR. The effect of the latter, by the way, is really noticeable when shooting, which is not so often observed even with phones even of a higher class. Yes, and the panoramas shot on the J5 Prime camera please with the level of detail, the overall image quality and, importantly, completely invisible gluing points.

In addition to the preset modes, the phone allows the owner to independently adjust the shooting parameters. You can manually adjust the exposure, set the desired exposure value, and also adjust the ISO level.

daytime shooting

In daylight and sufficient lighting, the camera produces very decent pictures with excellent detail and maximum clarity. The color rendition is very close to the original gamut, the camera adjusts the white balance extremely accurately. In addition, the brightness of the resulting images and the saturation of colors in the photo also leave only pleasant impressions. Also worth noting is the good autofocus speed.

The quality of daytime shots, as you can see, is excellent.
Saturated colors, maximum detail, no fuzzy fragments

However, the situation changes slightly even in a well-lit room with daylight - moving objects take on fuzzy outlines.
The camera on the Galaxy J5 Prime sometimes illuminates the space - if the light source is in the background, it is likely that the foreground will fall into darkness
Pictures are rich and detailed

As often happens with budget and mid-range cameras from Samsung, the problems start after dark. As soon as the phone begins to lack available lighting, various noises and blurring appear in the pictures. The camera instantly loses all its positive qualities and turns into a simple soap dish. Autofocus often starts to act up and noticeably slows down, moving objects in the pictures look like blurry spots, and in general the picture is rather unsightly. For the sake of a decent result, you can, of course, take several shots, aim the lens exclusively at static objects and take the most stable hand position. But, you see, it is far from always possible to dance with your phone for a good picture.

With a decrease in available light, the quality of the pictures also decreases. In the case of static ones, everything is a little simpler, but you can’t avoid noise. Most of the first photos will look like this - blurry edges and an unsightly picture. By the way, due to the features of the PLS matrix, you may be a little upset by the color reproduction of black colors. Black looks more saturated in AMOLED

Front-camera

The front camera on the J5 Prime has a resolution of 5 megapixels and an aperture with an aperture of f / 2.2. The front camera of the phone is expectedly worse than its partner on the other side of the case. The faces in the selfie look a little blurry, you can’t expect much detail and saturation from the pictures. During the day, the result is quite tolerable, but in the evening or in poor lighting, the quality is significantly reduced.

Among other things, the developers have placed here the function of a wide-angle selfie, which slightly increases the boundaries of the camera capture and makes the process of shooting an image even more comfortable.

What about video?

Video is recorded in Full HD quality with a resolution of 1920 x 1280 pixels and a frame rate of 30 fps. In comparison with the pictures, the quality of the videos pleases both when shooting on the main camera and on the front. The time of day and illumination also have little effect on the picture - the quality does not deteriorate, the brightness and saturation do not sag, the detailing retains its level.

In general, the phone's camera behaves quite standardly not only for the economy class, but also for the junior middle class from Samsung. During the day, you can safely take pictures and not worry about the quality of the pictures - they will definitely be good. But in the evening it is worth giving preference to a camera or other more powerful equipment.

Review

Great phone for your money. I really liked the design, the metal case gives the phone an amazing look and high cost, it lies perfectly in the hand and causes pleasant tactile sensations. The phone is very fast compared to the old Samsung galaxy s3, in general, the speed is 5+, but the camera, although 13, is well compared to the same S3, which has 8 worse. The display, although not Super AMOLED, turned out to be excellent, the color transmission is high, the colors are saturated and bright, the viewing angles are high. Of course, there is not enough light sensor, well, setting the brightness to the maximum, even with the bright sun on the street, the display is completely readable. Excellent oleophobic coating hardly leaves fingerprints. It is a pity that there is no NFC without which it is impossible to use Samsung Pay. The speaker is now on the side due to which it is in your pocket and when it just lies on the table it is not obscured. The sound is quite loud and clear both in the external speaker and in the conversational one, sometimes you even have to turn down the volume during a conversation so that it would not be heard by those standing nearby. Uncritical, but at first it was not convenient because the buttons do not have a backlight, then I got used to it. Finally, a full-fledged SIM card slot does not have to choose between a second SIM and a memory card. The average battery is enough for a day of active use. The fingerprint is smart, though sometimes it does not work the first time. In general, the phone is completely satisfied with the price and quality is fully consistent with 100%. I also want to say a few words about the store itself, I ordered it via the Internet by paying with a Mastercard card and received a nice bonus in the form of a 5% discount, and not only after I picked up the phone, but by the way, it was ready in an hour, after I took it, a promotional code came in half an hour for 500 rubles. and plus almost 2500 points on the card with which I can pay up to 100% of the purchase. I also really liked the service itself, the sales consultants were polite and competent and explained all the nuances of how to use the bonuses and the promotional code for which I purchased the case.

In terms of the saturation of the model range, Samsung can be considered the leader in the same way as in terms of sales. Despite the fact that the company's image is created by premium devices like the Galaxy S7, it also has something to show in the low-cost handset segment. One of the latest devices of this level was the Samsung Galaxy J5 Prime, announced in September and released in October 2016. You can buy it now for about $200.

Despite the fact that the device bears the name J5, this is not just an improved version of its predecessor, but a slightly different device. Screen, materials, chipset are the main differences between the models. Other features of the Samsung J5 Prime, its pros and cons, will help determine our review of this smartphone.

We would like to draw your attention to the fact that the J5 Prime is an intermediate smartphone from the J series. We wrote about the 2017 J5, which was introduced later.

In terms of features, the Galaxy J5 Prime is a device located on the border of the budget and mid-price segment.

Design, body materials, dimensions and weight

The smartphone is significantly different in appearance from the simple J5 2016: it is made of a different material, has a smaller size, and looks more expensive than its predecessor. Galaxy J5 Prime dimensions are 141x69 mm, thickness - 8.1 mm, and it weighs 143 grams. These are more than typical dimensions for a 5-inch device. Traditionally for Samsung, there are no complaints about the assembly: the parts fit exactly, there are no gaps, squeaks and backlashes.

The front panel of the smartphone is made of glass with rounded edges, which is new for the budget J-series. The rounding is good, it makes the appearance of the device more interesting than its predecessor. Tactile sensations are increased. Below the display is the familiar oval Home key, on the sides of it are the touch buttons for backtracking and the menu of running applications, they are not backlit. Above the display is a speaker grid, a camera, an LED indicator and a proximity sensor eye.

The back panel is made of metal, but at the bottom and top there are plastic inserts that mask the antennas. The camera lens is inscribed in an almost square window, to the right of it is a flash window, the same in shape, but smaller in size. There is nothing else (except for the Samsung and Duos logos) on the back of the smartphone.

The side frame has no distinct borders and smoothly blends into the rear panel (or the rear panel blends into the frame - here's how to look). The layout of the elements is not quite ordinary, but this is Samsung, it is not the first time. The power / lock button takes its place on the right, but above it, instead of a volume control swing, there is a slot for the speaker.

The left side is quite loaded with elements: there are 2 sound buttons, and separate slots for SIM cards and flash drives. There is nothing on the top of the device.

And the bottom end is occupied by the MicroUSB port and holes for the microphone, headphone jack.

CPU

The Samsung J5 Prime is the first smartphone based on the new Exynos 7570 chipset. This chip, created using a 14 nm manufacturing process, contains 4 Cortex A53 cores with a frequency of 1.43 GHz. Mali T720 is responsible for graphics processing. Such a tandem of the CPU and GPU for 2016 is quite budgetary, and does not cause delight. However, for basic tasks its power is enough.

What pleases in the new chip is the processor cores: although there are 4 of them, there is no particular difference with some eight-core MT6750 or MT6753. With graphics, everything is ambiguous, the possibilities in terms of 3D processing are the minimum acceptable for 2016. Of course, it will be possible to play, but you can not dream of high settings. And the AnTuTu chipset gives out 35 thousand points, and only about 3 thousand of them are graphics merit (for comparison, Adreno 506 is gaining 12 thousand, and Mali T860 MP2 - 7 thousand).

Memory

The amount of RAM Samsung J5 Prime is 2 GB, it is recruited by LPDDR3 chips. At the start of the system, the OS consumes about 1 GB, which is typical for modern devices. There is enough memory to hold multiple tasks without worrying about crashes.

Built-in memory 16 GB, of which about 9 are available. The slot for a flash drive pleases - it is separate. If last year we attributed the combined slot to the minuses, now it is perceived as something ordinary, but a separate slot seems to be a plus. Support for USB OTG drives is also pleasing.

Battery

The battery capacity is 2400 mAh, which is 700 mAh less than the J5 2016. However, thanks to the energy-efficient processor, there is no reason to blame the smartphone for autonomy. If you play videos from memory, you can count on 10 hours of work, about the same amount you can surf the Internet. With two hours of active screen per day, you can count on 3 days. This is a good performance, comparable to Xiaomi Redmi 3 equipped with a 4100 mAh battery.

cameras

The smartphone has a 1/3" camera with a resolution of 13 MP, apparently the same as the J5 and J7 2016. It is equipped with f / 1.9 optics and LED flash. In daylight, the smartphone takes good pictures, with a good level of detail, a wide (albeit not maximum) dynamic range, natural colors.Indoors, too, everything is decent (better than Xiaomi Redmi Note 3).The camera only gives out in the evening, in the twilight it does not stand out for anything good.

A 5 MP camera is installed on the front, its aperture is f / 2.2 (the J5 had f / 1.9). The second deterioration is the front flash: for the first time in the J5 series, it is not. But both cameras are able to shoot video of tolerable quality in FullHD resolution, with a frame rate of 30 FPS. Selfie camera:

Camera overview:

Screen

The display of the Samsung J5 Prime is a mixed bag. It has a size of 5 inches, a resolution of 1280x720 and is quite standard in this regard. It is interesting that the matrix was created using the technology not AMOLED or IPS, but PLS. This is a compromise, intermediate solution between IPS and TN.

Picture quality is comparable to cheap IPS panels, and better than good TN. For a smartphone of this price category, the matrix is quite good (IPS does not look better in Doogee and Oukitel), and it also has a good margin of brightness (slightly over 400 cd/m2). The display is covered with Gorilla Glass of an unknown generation (probably third), with rounded edges and medium-quality oleophobic coating.

Communications

The smartphone is equipped with two nanoSIM slots, they are independent. All GSM and UMTS/HSPA networks are supported, there are no problems with LTE either. The built-in modem complies with the LTE Cat. 4. Wi-Fi works in 802.11 b/g/n networks. It is a pity that 5 GHz frequencies are not supported. The navigator works with GPS and GLONASS satellites, and it works smartly. The device does not have an infrared port, NFC and other features of more expensive smartphones.

Sensors

The Samsung J5 Prime is equipped with a fingerprint scanner, a first for the J-series. However, the smartphone was clearly deprived of other sensors, and this is characteristic problem Samsung. The device has a proximity sensor, accelerometer and orientation sensor. The smartphone has no compass, no gyroscope, no magnetometer. Yes, what is there: even the Samsung J5 Prime was deprived of a banal light sensor.

Sound

The speaker of the smartphone is located unusually, on the left side face. This solution is quite successful, since the hand does not close it. The sound is moderately loud, not creaky, in general, typical for a normal smartphone. You can listen to music in headphones without fear that your ears will wilt: there are basses, the top does not lift up. The device is equipped with an FM radio.

Operating system

The Galaxy J5 Prime is running Android 6 with proprietary graphical interface TouchWiz. In comparison with the flagships, some of the shell's capabilities are cut down. Nevertheless, this is still the same Samsung, with a familiar look, a redesigned curtain and support for interchangeable themes. The system works properly, no obvious glitches were found in it.

Peculiarities

For the J-series, the smartphone has become innovative in many ways: a fingerprint scanner and a metal case have appeared. An important advantage in the form of a separate slot remained in place. But the rejection of the front flash (chips of this line) will upset selfie lovers a little.

Pros and cons

  • good design and materials;
  • excellent energy optimization;
  • fast processor cores;
  • good camera;
  • fingerprint scanner;
  • separate microSD slot.

Flaws:

  • no light sensor and auto brightness control;
  • no support for Wi-Fi 5 GHz;
  • weak graphics.

Who is a smartphone for?

Samsung J5 Prime will suit fans of this manufacturer who are looking for an inexpensive and compact smartphone with good autonomy. If the numbers in the characteristics fade into the background, and you need a workhorse, the device will fit perfectly. A nice case makes the smartphone attractive in appearance, which expands the audience. The camera is also noteworthy, for lovers of a quick photo it will be enough.

Our review of the J5 Prime

The Samsung Galaxy J5 Prime is not a successor to the J5 (2016), but is a good alternative to it. The hero of the review has economical hardware, shows good autonomy and has an attractive appearance. It is equipped with a fingerprint scanner, which is a plus, and also takes good pictures. The only downside is the lack of a light sensor and a weak graphics processor.

The competitor of Samsung Galaxy J5 Prime is Xiaomi Mi 3S. It compares favorably with the price, more powerful hardware, 3/32 GB of memory, similar indicators of autonomy, but is inferior in terms of the camera and has a combined second SIM / flash drive slot. Roughly the same can be said about the Meizu M3S. Sony Xperia E5 has about the same camera, screen, but does not have such decent autonomy. In general, the device is quite adequate for its money, given the branded origin.

Samsung products are popular in Russia. Of course, its image is created by flagship smartphones, however, inexpensive gadgets deserve the attention of the buyer. The model range of the Korean manufacturer is quite rich. In terms of the number of released phones, Samsung is the undisputed leader. This brand also occupies the first position in the rating in terms of sales.

In 2016, the presentation of the new smartphone J5 Prime took place. Reviews about it, as well as characteristics will be presented in detail in the article. The device belongs to the category of inexpensive devices. In December 2016, the price for it was approximately $200.

Before proceeding with the review of the smartphone, you need to consider one point. Its name uses the code J5. This model is already known to the buyer, but the device with the prefix Prime is not its improved version. This is a fundamentally different device. The differences are in the hardware "stuffing" and other elements (screen, material, cameras, etc.). What features does this model have?

Ergonomics, appearance, dimensions

Samsung Galaxy J5 Prime (Gold, Black) looks quite presentable. The phone differs from its predecessor primarily in the case material. Here, the developers used metal, which is undoubtedly worthy of respect. Quality and assembly raise no objections. During operation, users did not notice any squeaks or backlash. Details are fitted as accurately as possible, so there are no gaps. But, in principle, this is quite in the spirit of Samsung, because the company produces high quality even "state employees".

The dimensions of the smartphone did not surprise buyers at all, as they are fully consistent with devices that are equipped with a 5-inch display. The body height was 142 mm with a width of 69 mm. The thickness parameter also applies to the average - 8.1 mm. The same can be said about the mass of the apparatus. Its weight is 143 g.

How is the front panel of the Samsung Galaxy J5 Prime designed? 2.5D effect glass adds originality. It is worth noting that such a solution was first used in the J-line. Now we can safely say that it is successful. The smartphone looks interesting precisely because of this glass. Under the screen there is a control panel with a mechanical key. This design is a kind of hallmark of Samsung smartphones. It is, as usual, oval in shape, framed by a chrome frame. It is built in. On the sides of the mechanical key there are two touch keys. They do not have a backlight, but thanks to the silver markings, they stand out well against the general background. The right button performs the back function, the left one opens the menu of running applications.
