Software for 3d scanning. Scans assembly and global registration

Every 3D scanner on the market generates millions of mathematical lines, coordinates and data during operation, which a person cannot understand without special software. The program performs a very complex amount of work: it receives data from the scanner, processes it, corrects and modernizes it, and converts it into a convenient format for output. Therefore, when purchasing a 3D scanner, immediately think about purchasing a package of suitable software. You will find the full catalog on the page https://cybercom.ru/catalog/3d-software/.

Help with scanning

The initial setup of the scanner, setting the basic parameters, receiving primary data and their simple processing - this is done by the first-round programs. Artec Studio is considered the leader in this regard. The complex is popular among beginners because it has a simple and intuitive interface. However, it has wide functionality that is enough to work with any device.

Processing the results

So, you have a primary 3D scan of an object that is not yet possible to work with. First, it needs to be processed. This is done by second-round programs that convert raw data into editable models. Such solutions are designed by 3D Systems. She has several interesting specimens:

  • Geomagic Design X. The program creates parametric CAD models, converting the resulting scans in a matter of seconds. CAD modeling is reaching a new level.

When starting a review of 3D modeling and design software, it is necessary to outline two global tasks that it is aimed at solving:

  • processing of 3D scanning and modeling data;
  • preparing models for 3D printing.

In this article we will look at the main functionality and advantages of software products presented on the Russian market by iQB Technologies.

I. Software for processing 3D scanning data

It is important to understand that the scanning process itself is only the first stage of work; it is simply the collection of “raw” information. To get the final result, we must process the scan data using specialized software.

The purpose of this type of software is to create a virtual three-dimensional copy physical object for its subsequent use in computer-aided design systems, technological preparation of production and engineering analysis (CAD/CAM/CAE).

After scanning is completed, the received data is processed in software products. 3D scanners represent data as a cloud of points, and modern models represent data as polygonal models (points that are stitched together using triangulation). Using the software, you can eliminate errors in a scanned model, create a set of NURBS surfaces, design full-fledged parametric solid models, analyze possible changes and errors, conduct research, comparative analysis, and control the size and quality of a physical object.

3D Radar mode

The latest version of Artec Studio offers a new "3D radar" mode - an indication of the range relative to the object for greater convenience of its 3D digitization when using Eva, Space Spider scanners or earlier versions of Artec 3D scanners. Artec Studio software helps keep the scanner at the optimal distance from the object, displaying the read data in green in real time. If you move the scanner closer, the display will turn yellow, and then red if you get too close. If you move too far from the object, you will see a blue projection color. This is a very convenient tool for both new and experienced users, providing best results working with Artec scanners.

Optimal raw data texture for more efficient verification

Artec Studio 13 has optimized raw data visualization to make it easier to process textured scans. The colors of the raw data have been improved so that now the quality of the reading can be assessed quite simply even before gluing the scans together.

Expedited Global Registration

The Global Registration algorithm is now not only 100% faster, but has also become even more powerful! Now, thanks to this, it is easy to work even with complex objects.

Smart 3D rendering

Artec Studio will automatically detect the characteristics of your computer. If you run out of power, the smart 3D rendering mode won't overload your computer's RAM. As you rotate the 3D model, Artec Studio will display it as a point cloud. And as soon as you stop the rotation, you will again see a completely polygonal mesh on the screen. This mode allows you to quickly rotate high-quality 3D models, even on a tablet.

Now you can check the quality of registration in just a few seconds and get better results much faster. Thanks to the optimized Max Error mode, you no longer need to check scans manually, as frames that require closer attention are automatically highlighted for your convenience.

The Artec Studio interface has become even simpler. One button switches the basic interface to a full-featured one that offers all the advanced tools. And for those who are accustomed to using 3D navigation, we have provided this option. Everything to make working with 3D models even easier.

Friends, a short introduction!
Before reading the news, let me invite you to the largest community of 3D printer owners. Yes, yes, it already exists, on the pages of our project!

Three-dimensional printing continues to increase its influence on the Russian market and today 3D printers are used not only for printing souvenirs, but also in industry, medicine, and even the production of parts for mechanisms. However, 3D printing developers did not stop at improving printers. What should you do if your child wants a copy of a toy or you want to get a model of the Buddha statue you saw in the picture? This is why 3D scanners were created! However, to use such devices, you need to find quality software. We suggest considering some options for programs for 3D scanners.

Photomodeler Scanner

One of the most best programs for 3d scanning is Photomodeler Scanner. If you need professional software, then this option is capable of recreating an almost perfect model. Photomodeler is able to recreate an entire 3D world that will be as close to reality as possible. With the help of a 3D printer, scanner and this program you can even print a person! For example, a user can scan the human face of his husband or wife, and the three-dimensional model will exactly match the original.

Photomodeler Scanner

The modeling procedure begins with importing photographs into the created project within the program. The only thing you need to remember is the position of the video camera at the time of the photo. This is necessary in order to fit the object in question as best as possible into the dimensions that will be used to carry out the necessary operations with a potential three-dimensional model. Then you will definitely need to mark the control points and link them in all possible photographs of the object. The advantages of the program are the following features:

  • Creating graphs and diagrams
  • Formation of planes over certain coordinates
  • 3D Line Extensions
  • Support for mask with alpha channel

Polygon Edition Tool

To work with Konica Minolta scanners, they use the Polygon Edition Tool program. With this program you can scan, process and export data. The finished file takes up about 2 megabytes of memory. Using the Polygon Edition Tool, the user has the ability to export files with the extensions .stl, .dxf and everyone's favorite .obj.

Polygon Edition Tool

If you are fans of Konica Minolta printers, then you can safely install the Polygon Edition Tool. The program is available for free download. Main functions of the program:

  • Ability to “stitch” scans. After scanning, the program generates a cloud of points located in the coordinate system.
  • The function of combining these points into one model
  • Subsequent editing of the virtual object
  • Creating polygonal models and editing them
  • Possibility of conducting operations with structures

Creaform released the VxScan program back in 2007, but it is still actively used in the field of 3D printing. Her latest version(1.3) includes new features and functionality. This software is mainly designed for Creaform HandyScan scanners. If you decide to purchase one of the models from this company, the seller will give you the VxScan software package. Note that the program allows you to control the scanning process in real time. Also, the user will be able to not only process the data, but also export it to .stl format.

One of the most convenient and widespread programs is the RapidForm version. If you want to find a high-quality program that is suitable for any printer model, then we suggest considering Rapid Form 2006, which is distinguished by its versatility and ease of use. Using such a program, the user will be able to create a high-quality model based on a polygonal mesh. In turn, the mesh is created based on 3D scanning data.

The program's simple and accessible interface makes it easy to edit images. The owner of a 3D scanner will have the opportunity to quickly convert a point cloud into a full-fledged three-dimensional model. The following RapidForm programs are shared:

Rapidform XOS, which is a powerful tool for monitoring object scanning. You can also process images using XOS.

Rapidform XOR is one of the most advanced and modern programs for 3D scanners. It is great for reverse engineering. Using XOR, the user has the opportunity to create models based on the point cloud, which is formed after scanning. The power of modeling tools knows no bounds. The program helps create high-quality prototypes of souvenirs, parts, and so on.

Another representative of Rapidform is XOV, which is excellent for quality control. The main task of the program is to compare the point cloud and the resulting model. This allows you to increase the level of detail many times over.

Geomagic Studio

Another program for professional modeling and 3D scanning is Geomagic Studio. It functions as an editor that is capable of performing a huge number of operations to process the scanned model. The program also allows you to work with NURBS surfaces. Like all similar programs, Geomagic is capable of exporting models to various formats and checking the quality of the scans. After the operation of the device is completed, the program produces all the data in the form of a report. Thanks to quality control, the user can get almost perfect results.

As we have already noted, 3D printing has already become a part of our lives. However, 3D scanners allow you to duplicate ready-made objects, which means that the modeling process can be accelerated significantly. They allow you to recreate an almost perfect copy of the model. Of course, choosing good software is very important. Most often, scanner manufacturers provide the user with the necessary software package, but they are not always equipped with all the necessary tools.

Outwardly it seems quite simple - the device illuminates the product, and the 3D image on the computer screen is ready. However, in reality everything turns out to be a little more complicated. The volume scanning process can be divided into the following stages:

1. Preparing the part

Preparation of parts includes:

  • disassembling a complex product into parts;
  • cleaning from dirt and rust;
  • matting;
  • marking.

Black, shiny and transparent surfaces require preliminary preparation before scanning, otherwise the scanner simply “will not see” them. A finely dispersed white matting spray is applied to the pre-cleaned surface. After scanning, the spray can be washed off with water, and residues in hard-to-reach places can be removed with alcohol.

For the best automatic stitching of individual scans, markers are applied to the part - black dots on an adhesive base, which after scanning are easily removed and do not leave marks.

2. Selecting a scanning area and setting up the scanner

The scanner is configured and calibrated depending on the size of the part and the required scanning accuracy.

3. Receipt sufficient quantity scans details from all sides.

Scanning in hard-to-reach places is particularly challenging. In this case, a number of surfaces, for example, deep holes, will remain inaccessible to the scanner; they will have to be completed at the stage of solid-state modeling.

4. Automatic or semi-automatic stitching of scans with accuracy control

In the software supplied with the scanner, the scans are stitched into one model, where you can also carry out the initial cleaning of the model from debris, noise and holes.

The result is a polygonal model in stl format (the surface of a part consisting of many triangles).

5. Processing the stl model

In special software, for example Geomagic, the stl model is finished, at this stage a smooth, solid surface is obtained. Most operations are carried out in semi-automatic mode. The complexity of this stage depends on how well the product was scanned. Such a model can already be sent for 3D printing, but cannot be edited in a CAD program; for this it is necessary to create a solid model.

6. Obtaining a solid model from a point cloud, with simultaneous refinement (cutting off debris, scanned marks, manufacturing defects of the part, for example, welded seams).

7. 3D model with construction tree

The next stage of working with the resulting model can be the creation of a 3D model with a construction tree. At stage 6, a solid solid blank is obtained without a design concept and design logic. If you need to make changes to the model, you need to have a construction tree for this.

8. Drawing

Based on the model obtained at stage 6 or 8, a drawing is produced, and also, if necessary, a contour for it. laser cutting or sweep. To correctly draw a drawing, you need to know the material of the part. For this purpose, a materials science examination is carried out, or the designer determines the material at his own discretion based on the purpose of the product and its operating conditions.

The chief designer performs a full range of work on the reverse engineering of a part or product, including determining materials and issuing design documentation. Send a photo of the object by email [email protected] With brief description tasks, and we will answer you as soon as possible.
